Things here do not exactly turn out as I thought it would be... I was sure that I only had to go to the university, find a schedule and attend the courses. It took me a whole day to understand how to attend my first lesson. It's very complicated, I have to attend the same lessons that they are attending at my home university, so I had to do a personal schedule, and the buildings are all over the city, and it's far bigger than what I thought. I didn't even find the students secretary, where I have to announce my arrival.
I had my first lessons today, and I understood more or less what it was about, I have to improve my vocabulary but at least I'm a bit relieved because I thought it would be worse. I cannot understand the other students though, because they speak a sort of dialect. I tried to communicate with some, they understand perfectly what I say, but I don't understand them, like at all ! It's terrible... so I don't dare to speak anymore :s I know that I have to though, because it's the only way to learn. The people are not really friendly here, the are not really interested. I was trying to says something to a guy, and he noticed my awkward sentences, but he just answered my question and never asked where I was from or anything, as if he didn't want to talk to me.
I feel a bit lonely and lost in this city for the moment, and I have nothing to do as I know nobody. At least I can speak with my polish roommate. We speak a lot together, we don't know each other very well so it's random talks about nothing really interesting. I don't know her well enough to begin to joke, because I often say things to be taken at the second degree and people that don't know me take it literally sometimes, and think I'm a real jerk, and that's not the purpose :) The guy didn't show up since I arrived, he disappeared and nobody knows where he has gone. I'm looking forward to see him again because he seemed well funny.
I'm definitely going home this weekend!

Woah, that sounds a bit rough. I hope it all works out, it sounds like you'll be okay. Where did you go to again? Perhaps I should backtrack to some of your previous posts . . .
That does sound like a disappointing beginning to your semester.
I think you are right to say that you need to keep speaking to people. Some of the German dialects are very different from Hochdeutsch, but I think it is mostly how they pronounce the words. In any case, the more you listen to what they say, the more you'll come to understand it.
The other advantage of being where there are other people is that it gives you the opportunity to meet friends. Maybe you won't meet someone in the first few days, but in time you probably will. I'm shy, so I know it is difficult to introduce yourself to a stranger. If you don't introduce yourself, eventually someone will introduce himself to you.
When you do begin to make acquaintances, you can explain that you have trouble with the local dialect, and maybe they'll help you.
I understand why you want to go home for the weekend, but I don't think it would be a good idea to keep going home every weekend. The weekends in your university city will give you more time to train your ear for the local dialect, and there will be more opportunities to meet people. So I think it would be useful for you to stay there at least some weekends.
I hope everything turns out fine. It is always hard to move. Do you plan to get your own internet connection or will you just try to leech the whole time?
Thanks for your comments, I know that it will be better in a few weeks, but it not really funny for the moment.
Aek: I'm in a big city in eastern Switzerland.
Naturgesetz: Don't worry, as soon as I will know some people I will stay on the weekends, but for the moment I have nothing to do, and a weekend is long... but then I will stay more so I can discover the city and culture better, as you said.
Zee: at first I planned to get a connection, but you cannot get one for less than 12 month, and I'm staying only a half year, so it's too expensive... So I think that I will continue to catch the signal of the neighbour, and buy a parka ;)
